If you are interested in visiting Kingsdown School, please contact the school office who will arrange for you to visit the school and meet Margaret Rimmer, Headteacher.
Kingsdown School is a school for pupils aged between 3-14 years who have a range of differing needs which include, severe learning difficulties, profound and multiple learning difficulties, visual impairment, hearing impairment and physical disabilities with associated learning difficulties. Many of the pupils have communication difficulties.
At Kingsdown School, the wide range of needs of the pupils is reflected in a diverse and broad curriculum. This provides learning opportunities which actively encourage all pupils to experience a wide range of educational activities using all of their senses. We teach to the National Curriculum in all subjects; many pupils are working towards Level 1 in all subjects. To measure their progress we use the ‘P’ Level Assessment and break this down further using an assessment package called ‘B’ Squared.
All pupils have personalised individual educational targets as well as targets in each curriculum subject. Much of the teaching and learning is delivered in a practical way using stimulating and exciting resources to focus the pupils’ attention, which is often very short.
Staff levels are high to enable small group work and 1:1 opportunities. Our teaching centres around giving meaningful experiences to the children by using real objects so that the pupils are learning first hand. We aim to make our school environment stimulating, using both visual and tactile cues.
We are delighted to report that our swimming pool is now in use. The pool and the facilities are fantastic and have been designed so that all the pupils at Kingsdown are able to enjoy swimming regardless of their age or size. We are extremely pleased with the end result, it has definitely been worth waiting for.

September 2009, Phase 2 of our new building, saw the opening of the new sensory room. Here, pupils can develop vital skills such as tracking, as well as having the opportunity to use various switches to learn about cause and effect. This is an important part of the curriculum for many pupils.
Music is an area that many of the pupils find very motivating. We have a small Music Room which has a range of musical instruments, including mainly percussion and a number of keyboards. All pupils have music as part of their curriculum package.
Kingsdown School ‘Soft Play’ area is in the shape of a ‘Ship’. This is a two-level building with an electric lift, ball pool, a slide and various pieces of soft equipment. It is accessible to all, regardless of disability. The children love it!
Our new purpose-built playground is now complete. It contains a wide variety of specialist play equipment and all the children thoroughly enjoy their time there.

We have a trike garage which allows us to safely store the wide variety of trikes and bicycles that the pupils use during break and lunch times.
We now also have two purpose built canopies that will provide shade from the sun in the summer. Both canopies are designed for wheelchair users as well as having seating.

The school has a small Sensory Garden and this is used by the pupils at various times during the day.
In December we introduced horse riding to the curriculum which is proving to be very popular with the pupils taking part and it is our aim to increase the number of sessions over time so that more pupils are able to enjoy this exciting activity.
